FRIENDSHIP

He was looking at a picture

of his son hugging his grandson,
and soon he picked up a pencil
and held it with care.
He turned it in his fingers
and examined the black lead
at the tip. He touched
the piece of paper with the lead
and led the pencil softly
across the paper to the edge
and then started again
at the left side.
The pencil left words
resting on the paper,
side by side in companionship.
