SITTING STILL

5:15 a.m.

So many things were sitting still
that morning. He tried to see
something that was moving, but all
was quietness and satisfaction.
The chairs chose to stay right
where they were, the clock liked
its place on the wall, and the cabinets
in the kitchen were stock-still
and content. And he, too, stayed
where he was, in the blue chair
by the window, where he could see
the world that was also pleased

to be sitting peacefully still.
